Project

Bus stations

It is almost impossible for mobility impaired people in Guatemala City to use public transport. Design without Borders has contributed to the development of a new and accessible bus system.

In 2007, the Department Urban Mobility in Guatemala City started building the city's new BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) bus system, the “TransMetro”. Design without Borders has produced a manual with guidelines for the design of accessible bus stations. The design specifications are based on the principle of universal design. This means that the disabled and elderly for the first time can travel on public transport in the city without assistance.

In-depht stories

Universal design in public bus system

It is dangerous, chaotic and difficult to travel on public transport in Guatemala City. The municipality has addressed this and invested in a bus system that is safe and efficient. Design without Borders has designed station areas that are accessible for all – regardless of their physical abilities.
