Project

Cycle paths

Guatemala City, the capital of Guatemala, is suffering under chaotic traffic conditions. Design without Borders has produced a plan for the development of cycle paths in the city.

The number of vehicles in Guatemala City is increasing rapidly and without sufficient increases in road capacity.  This is contributing to a deteriorating traffic situation.  As part of an effective solution cycling needs to be promoted as an alternative, effective and economically accessible means of transport.
Design without Borders and the municipality of Guatemala Cityhave completed the design of the city's future network of cycle paths.  The municipality has just committed to this plan by starting construction of the city's first separated cycle path The municipality now has a design manual to guide all future bicycle planning in the city.

Intro

Cycling in Guatemala City

In Guatemala Design without Borders also have projects in urban planning. This time they are developing a manual for cycle paths that makes it possible to cycle in the heavily trafficked, polluted and criminally infested capital. The Norwegian foundation for Design and Architecture in Norway's industrial designer, Cathal O 'Meara, cycles in Guatemala on a daily basis. Few others dare to risk it, aside from poor trades people transporting their goods.
Feature

No borders for design

Design without Borders wishes to be a driving force and a team member in the link between design and aid. In Guatemala City, for example, they are working to ensure that the inhabitants can cycle without risking their lives.
In-depht stories

Cycle paths in Guatemala City

A poor selection of transport alternatives makes it difficult to travell in a cheap and safe manner in Guatemala City. Design without Borders is developing a manual for the building of cycle paths. It will make the process of developing a safe transport alternative easier for the municipality.
