Life jacket

Design without Borders' locally produced life jacket provides the poor fishermen of Uganda with a safer working day.

The number of drownings amongst Ugandan fishermen is very high. The reason being is that many fishermen can't swim and are reluctant to use a life jacket
In collaboration with the Ugandan organisation, National Lake Rescue Institute, Design without Borders has developed a user-friendly and locally produced life jacket. The organisation reports that more and more fishermen are investing in the life-saving garment.

Intro

New life jacket saves lives

Re-designed life jackets provide safer conditions for Ugandan fishermen and their families.
Feature

Floating design

Every year, thousands of fishermen die in East African lakes. Poor swimming abilities, small boats and the lack of safety equipment makes fishing a high risk occupation.
In-depth stories

Re-design of life jackets

Every year, several thousand Ugandans drown while they are out fishing or ferrying on Lake Victoria. Design without Borders has designed affordable life jackets, based on buoyant elements from fishing nets.
